Addressing Tough Barriers to Decreasing Family Conflict

Do you or your therapists get stuck in treatment when addressing tough drivers to family conflict, including caregiver fear of aggression? This workshop is designed to help therapists and supervisors expand their clinical repertoire by offering advanced strategies to assess and intervene effectively with high family conflict in order to achieve treatment outcomes. We will leverage and build on your existing skills and experiences to develop practical strategies that you can apply with families.
Fly to the moon: how to help ID-families make small steps to reach big goals
Trainers: Jo Leunissen & Femke Kuijpers
Are you sometimes struggling in MST when the youth or parent(s) seem to have an intellectual disability? Do you feel that you need to speak a different language? Are you even wondering if MST is the right program for these families? Or simply how to get better or easier results? Then you should come to this workshop! We will review common characteristics for people with an intellectual disability. We will discuss how to use the MST Analytic Process, the 9 Principles, and additional resources to tailor conceptualization and intervention development. How to ensure that plans are effective and developmentally appropriate. You will get the chance to share examples and practice designing interventions for these families.
And last but not least: you will work directly with the Dutch experts who are developing the “MST-ID Specialisation” in the Netherlands – so they have lots of knowledge and experience to share!
Working Effectively with MST Youth with Autism Spectrum Disorder Level 1

This workshop is designed to help therapists and supervisors support MST families with a youth that has Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD)/ Autistic Disorder (AD) Level 1. Diagnostic criteria and common characteristics will be reviewed. The MST Analytic Process, the 9 Principles, and additional resources will be linked to the family treatment tailoring process for case conceptualization and intervention development. Intervention plans will incorporate Principle 6 to ensure effectiveness and developmentally appropriateness. A case example will provide participants the opportunity to practice assessing and designing interventions for a young person with ASD level 1.
Understanding Adolescent Brain Development to Support Your Therapists to Target Barriers to Changing Parenting Practices

Want to become a mind reader?! In this workshop, supervisors will increase their own knowledge of adolescent brain development by looking at some recent neuroscientific research. You will learn how to apply this knowledge to support therapists to target barriers to changing parenting practices and will leave with strategies to build your teams knowledge base regarding adolescent brain development. Plus, be able to assess and adjust interventions to be more developmentally appropriate based on the expanded knowledge base.
Clinician Development Plans that Make a Difference

Are you looking for ways to make the most of your individual time with therapists and their development? The focus of this workshop will be on helping supervisors develop strategies and skills to facilitate clinicians’ effective treatment with families. Supervisors will receive guidance and share strategies for achieving the challenging task of successfully applying the Analytical Process and 9 Principles to clinician development and creating practical and effective development plans. The workshop will include exercises focused on a sample clinician as well as on clinicians with whom the supervisor currently works. Experiential exercises will focus on strategies for incorporating regular use of field visits, tape reviews, modeling and role plays into the clinician development process.

Building Champions: (advanced) strategies for stakeholder management and marketing

Stakeholder management in MST has never been more important: to get referrals, to get the best possible outcomes, to get budget contracts. However, it is not an easy task. So many different stakeholders around, so much at stake and time is only limited! Do you want to learn how to spend less time on stakeholder management AND have better results? How to build strong working relationships that last? In this workshop we will provide you with advanced tools for stakeholder management and we will practise how to use them. We will discuss strategies on how to select and connect to different types of stakeholders and how to use your marketing tools to keep them close and get results. This workshop is all about tips and tricks and is aimed at supervisors, (program) managers and program support staff.
The growing evidence: New directions and questions

During this workshop you will hear flash talks about some of the most exciting European research projects relating to MST. You will have the opportunity to ask questions or learn more about and from the researchers involved.
Studies that may be presented include research on caregivers’ and young peoples’ experiences with MST; research on working with diverse populations such as young people with ASD or ID, families from a minority ethnic background and adoptive families; research on adolescents at risk of criminal exploitation; research on families with child abuse or neglect; research on the Irish bail supervision scheme; research on a combined trajectory of a shortened out-of-home placement and MST (ThuisBest); and research on risk factors of early closure of teams. The exact content of the workshop has yet to be confirmed.

- Upgrading your Motivational Interviewing skills: Developing the skills to focus on the process of change before we get to what the change will look like (MST-CAN)

Motivational interviewing is a core technique heavily utilised within RBT. This workshop is aimed at those who want to delve deeper into the skills of clarifying clients strengths and aspirations, evoking their motivation for change, and promote autonomy of decision making. In this workshop you will practice the skills that support change in clients and assess your strengths and barriers in delivering these interventions.
- Parenting Skills Too? Making it possible amidst an array of pressing needs (MST-CAN)

Have parenting skills sometimes taken a back seat to other caregiver needs? Do you want to refresh your strategies to assess parental affective and instrumental skills? In this workshop, we’ll also focus on eliminating barriers to implementing new parenting skills and on incorporating behavioural teaching methods into your work with families.
